- On this night, the name of the game was defense. With the Region 7 title
on the line, the Indians used a late defensive touchdown to secure the #1
seed in the playoffs. Both defenses controlled the game in the first half.
The Chiefs punted 3 times and lost a fumble. The Indians punted 3 times
and lost 2 fumbles. It appeared we were headed for a scoreless first half.
However, the Chiefs completed a 40 yard pass to the Indian 9, and two
plays later, Matt Barnard hit Justin Grider for a 7 yard score with 13
seconds left. The PAT was wide, and the Chiefs took a 6-0 lead and the
momentum to the locker room. The Indians kicked off to start the second
half and the defense forced the Chiefs to punt from their own 4. The
Indians took over at the Chief 39, and on the first play, Chad Dewitt
found a lonesome Eric McCrary for the tying touchdown (view
play). Nathan Durham added
the PAT to give the Indians a 7-6 lead. The Chiefs responded with a 66
yard drive to the Indian 9, but missed a 26 yard field goal with 5:55 left
in the third quarter. The defenses took over for the remainder of the
game. With about 4 minutes left, a Nathan Durham punt pinned the Chiefs on
their own 1. On third down, the Chiefs tried a pass in the left flat, but Marchas Glover picked it off and returned it 9 yards for the clincher.
Durham kicked the LPAT (long PAT) after an unsportsmanlike conduct
penalty. The Indians travel to Guntersville next week for the final Region
7 contest. Our seniors were recognized prior to the game. Senior football
players are Jarrod Bowling, Will Crafts, Dustin Coffield, Nathan Durham,
Marquez Fletcher, Eric Frogge, Kelly Tisdale, and Stevie Winton. Senior
