Game 4 - East at Guntersville

East 9, Guntersville 7 - East survived its toughest test of the season to remain undefeated at 4-0. Junior Keith Southard kicked a 23 yd field goal with 4:36 remaining to provide the winning margin. A heavy, late afternoon rain and intermittent showers during the game provided tough playing conditions. A scoreless first half was mostly played in the middle of the field, with neither team mounting a serious threat. In the third quarter, the Indians recovered a fumble at the Wildcat 32. Six plays later, Evan Whiteside scored from 8 yards out on a bootleg. The PAT was blocked, and East led 6-0. With the weather conditions, many thought the score might stand, but the Wildcats had other ideas. Early in the fourth quarter, Darian Gurley's 26-yard run and the PAT put the Wildcats in the lead 7-6. Marquez Pride returned the ensuing kickoff to the Wildcat 27. After five plays, the Indians had first and goal on the Wildcat three. On first down, Pride got 2 yards to the 1, but the Wildcat defense rose up and stopped the Indians cold on second and third down. The Indians were going for the touchdown on fourth down, but were called for illegal motion. The 5-yard penalty set the stage for Southard's kick. The Indians still had to stop the Wildcats' last drive. The Wildcats drove to the Indian 29, but were stopped on downs with 1:17 remaining. The game ended on a coach's favorite play, Whiteside taking a knee. East travels to West Limestone next Friday for a non-Region contest. Guntersville hosts Scottsboro.
